Center for Creative Arts Faculty


Tom Anderson received both his Bachelor of Arts in music and a Master’s in composition and music
theory from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been an active instructor, performer, music
arranger, and composer for the past 35 years. As a brass coach and clinician, he has worked with
middle and high school brass selections throughout the area. He is currently an elementary music
teacher at Glen Allen Elementary School. In 2004, Tom was named Henrico County’s Music Educator
of the Year.

Susan D’Angelo Brown is a professional artist who has taught private studio art classes for 26 years.
She has a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University and studied with Harvey Dinnerstein at the
National Academy of Design and Fine Arts in New York. Her portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt hangs in
the Eleanor Roosevelt Institute of Human Rights, in Washington, D.C. She has exhibited her work in
Washington, D.C., New York, Richmond, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

Cliff Burnett is a professional musician who was trained in classical trumpet and electric guitar. He has
performed with rock and soul bands for over 40 years. He is an active member of Shady Grove’s
Sanctuary Choir, Guitar Ensemble, and Genesis Praise Band, and is a frequent mentor for their Boy’s
Chime Choir. Cliff has been teaching private lessons for over five years.

David Cary received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory. He
taught in the public school system for seven years, in church vocal and handbell choirs for 11 years,
and has been teaching private music lessons for 37 years. His students range from beginners to
advanced and enjoy recitals at nursing homes and churches. Many of David’s students have gone on to
advanced music studies at Interlochen or in universities.


Terry L. Chancellor holds a BFA in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She is
currently Chair of the Board of Directors for The Center as well as a Visual Arts Mentor/Instructor.  
She is an accomplished artist, designer and teacher who paints portraits and a variety of subjects on
commission, working mainly in acrylics, and also enjoys and teaches mixed-media art, stamping,
jewelry design, and floral arranging.  Her paintings have been shown in Northern Virginia and
Richmond.  Terry also serves as a summer camp instructor and facilitates retreats and workshops on
creativity and spiritual renewal.  

Scott Clark has a BA in Music Performance (Jazz Studies) from VCU. Scott performs as a drummer
with bands that tour regionally nationally including Ilad, a Richmond based rock band, and the
experimental jazz band Glows In The Dark. Scott has taught private lessons for over 15 years, and is a
well-known Percussion Instructor in Virginia & North Carolina high schools where he taught and
composed music for marching drumlines. Scott has trained students for performing with Drum Corps
International. Scott works with each students individual goals, whether that be rudiments and sight
reading for school ensembles or playing drums in a rock band.


Phyllis Coffman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Church Music from Virginia Commonwealth
University. She has taught private music lessons for 19 years, and her experience includes serving as
the past Director of Music Ministries for Gordonsville United Methodist Church near Charlottesville.
Phyllis is the organist and accompanist for Lakeside Baptist Church.


Sylvia N. Cooper received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University,
where she was enrolled in the Music Honors program, and the only piano major to present a full
honors recital. She received her Master of Divinity with a Church Music Concentration in 2003 from
Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Sylvia is an ordained minister and serves as Minister of
Music and Arts Ministries at Shady Grove United Methodist Church
.  She has served as accompanist
for the past fifteen years for the annual Youth Choir Jam state event, as well as adult choir
accompanist for the Methodist Southeastern Jurisdiction’s Music and Worship conference, both
sponsored by The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. (FUMMWA) A
Master’s level pianist, Sylvia has taught private piano for over 30 years
. She is a member of The
National Guild of Piano Teachers and the American College of Musicians; many of Sylvia’s students
participate in the national piano guild competition each May, and several students continue their

piano studies at the university level.

Doris Craddock is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has studied at VCU School of
Art. She has coached Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination teams which emphasize
creative thinking and problem solving, sending her teams to represent Virginia in the World Finals.
Doris is an accomplished artist who focuses on drawing and figure painting in oils and pastels. Her
work has been exhibited in Lynchburg and Richmond, Virginia.

Katrina Goodwin holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Southern Maine and a
Master of Music degree from Florida State University. She performs throughout the Greater
Richmond area with the Commonwealth Chamber Ensemble, the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra,
and the European Wind Ensemble. She has taught private clarinet and saxophone lessons for six years.

Pam McAllister received a Magna Cum Laude Bacherlor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education
from Roanoke College, and earned a Certification in Choral and General Music Education from the
University of Utah and Vandercook College of Music.  She is also certified in Kindermusik,  Music for
Young Children, and The Listening Program.  Pam has been teaching music in public schools and
privately for 24 years, and has also served as the Minister of Music at Shady Grove United
Methodist Church in Mechanicsville, and the Goochland Baptist Church.  Pam's ability to teach and
perform music ranging from pop to the classics is well-known.  She teaches students of all ages and
abilities.

Clifton McDaniel is a guitarist, songwriter, singer, and an award-winning composer. He has a Bachelor
of Music degree from JMU and has taught private lessons for over fifteen years, and has served as
Band Director for high school and middle school bands. Clifton performs with ILAD, a national
touring rock band, and The Moonbeams. Clifton teaches everything from classical guitar to jazz to
rock.

Edie Oswald is a decorative artist who has been working in the Richmond area for over 10 years. A
graduate of the College of Charleston, she also studied at Columbus College of Art and Design. Her
business, Flights of Fancy, specializes in murals and faux finishes, and she produces hand painted
glassware, accessories and mosaics for shops in the Carolinas and here in Virginia as well as at local art
shows. Edie has been teaching at The Center for Creative Arts for the last six years, as well as teaching
at area afterschool programs.

Crystal Proffitt is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree specializing in Art Education. She is a licensed art teacher for grades K-12. Crystal taught arts
and crafts at the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired and is currently
working with disabled children at the Children’s Hospital. She is an active painter specializing in
portraits and displays her paintings in Richmond. She takes a painterly approach using color and
brush strokes to depict emotion.  

Jason Scott has a Bachelors of Music from VCU, and a Masters in Music Performance and
Composition from New York University. Jason teaches sax, clarinet, and flute. Jason is an Adjunct
Faculty member at the University of Richmond, and serves as Band Director at The Richmond
Academy. Jason has performed with Chris Potter, Devils Workshop, Christian McBride, Mulgrew
Miller, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Kings of Swing, Fight the Big Bull, and Steven Bernstein.

Adam Schultz received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Music Composition and Voice Performance
from Shenandoah Conservatory. A versatile musician, he teaches voice, guitar and piano at The
Center. Adam is both a classically trained singer and lead vocalist for the Richmond-based rock band
Caulit Anything.   His love of music is infectious - Adam works superbly with student of all ages and
abilities.

Holly Rose Schmidt has a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance from Hartt School of Music,
University of Hartford, and had extensive Suzuki Training in Violin and Viola at Ithaca College of
Music. She has been teaching for 14 years, including serving as Artist In Residence at the Performing
Arts Institute and The University of Hartford Magnet School. Holly performs with the Windemere
String Quartet.

Keith T. Tan is the Music Minister at Christ Church Episcopal. He has a BA in piano performance
from the University of Richmond, and an MA from Regent University, and has taught at the
University of Richmond. Keith is also a composer and arranger whose work has been featured in
Richmond Symphony concerts.

Jake Thro has a Bachelors of Music in Music and Sound Recording from Shenandoah Conservatory.  
He has studied classical and jazz piano, cello, guitar, and bass.  Jake has performed with orchestras,
jazz combos, and rock bands for 16 years.  Jake is the keyboard player for the Richmond-based rock
band Caulit Anything.

Kathy Whittle is a graduate of the University of Virginia and began her studies at age nine. She
continued studying under Carole Moore with various master classes. She is the flutist for the
Commonwealth Chamber Ensemble, the Richmond Symphonic Winds, and the Chesterfield
Community Band. Kathy performs throughout the Greater Richmond area in music theatre, 18th
Century dance presentations, and various church engagements.
