Sylvia N. Cooper received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from
James Madison University, where she was enrolled in the Music Honors
program, and the only piano major to present a full honors recital. She
received her Master of Divinity with a Church Music Concentration in
2003 from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Sylvia is an
ordained minister and serves as Minister of Music and Arts Ministries at
Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Glen Allen, Virginia, where she
supervises an extensive graduated program of over 15 choirs and
ensembles, as well as supervises The Center for Creative Arts at Shady
Grove, which serves over 200 students in the church and community. She
has served as accompanist for the past fifteen years for the annual Youth
Choir Jam state event, as well as adult choir accompanist for the Methodist
Southeastern Jurisdiction’s Music and Worship conference, both
sponsored by The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship
Arts. (FUMMWA) A Master’s level pianist, Sylvia has taught private
piano for over 30 years and is in her third year as a piano instructor at the
Center. She is a member of The National Guild of Piano Teachers and the
American College of Musicians; many of Sylvia’s students participate in the
national piano guild competition each May, and several students continue
their piano studies at the university level. Lessons $32/half hour.


2011 NATIONAL PIANO GUILD PARTICIPANTS
The Center for Creative Arts has 10 students who will be entering
auditions in the National Piano Guild that will be held at the University of
Richmond on Saturday, May 7th and Friday, May 13th!
Student participants in the 2011 Piano Guild are Aashri Aggarwal,
Sophie Ali, Cynthia Andrianjavoto, Akhil Bokkisam, Simi Chakravarty,
Abigail Kelley, Samhita Pendyal, Sophie Reed, Alexandra Troisi, and
Connie Xu, all students of Sylvia Cooper, a piano instructor at the Center.
Students are presenting up to seven memorized classical, baroque, and
romantic period selections in front of certified judges. Each student will
receive the following rewards: a membership certificate according to
classification and a National Fraternity of Student Musicians membership
pin. Congratulations!
