ABOUT​
Dr. Ross Walter, Professor of Music, is the head of brass studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Walter received his Doctoral and Master’s degrees from Louisiana State University, and his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Idaho. Before coming to Richmond, Dr. Walter was trombonist with the Baton Rouge Symphony.

Recent highlights of Dr. Walter’s performance career include the Bogota Symphony Orchestra, Panama Symphony Orchestra, and faculty guest artist at the Universidad Bellas Artes’ 2023 International Brass Festival in Cartagena, Columbia. He performed at the 2023 United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Washington, D.C., the International Trombone Festival and Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Budapest, Hungary, and the 2025 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Valencia, Spain.

Dr. Walter is a passionate teacher who enjoys teaching students of all ages. College students study brass performance with Dr. Walter, and participate in his Chamber music program. Walter is the founder and music director of an international brass festival hosted by Fundacion Tocando Puertas in Cartagena, Columbia – he travels each year with students in a global education program to perform in the festival and to provide master classes, and deliver instruments, equipment and music to children.
In other service, Dr. Walter consulted as a teacher of instructors of Brass for Africa in Kampala, Uganda, and frequently represents VCU at national and international conferences including The Midwest Clinic, American Trombone Workshop, the Music Educators National Conference, and the Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria.

Dr. Walter is dedicated to providing excellent musical instruction and inspiration to young people. He teaches private lessons to middle and high school students for tuba, trombone, trumpet, euphonium, and French Horn. In addition to private lessons, he regularly arranges performances, master classes, and clinics in elementary, middle and high schools. One of his current students, a junior from Deep Run, has been first chair trombone in the All State Jazz Band for two years and euphonium in the All State Band for three years in a row. He also placed in the top ten of the Falcone Euphonium Competition this summer against college freshmen.
